Hopefully this new version of the popular Midland-48 will be available as an 80-channel set by the time you read this. Up to now it has only been available as a CEPT 40 channel version.
The main difference between this set and the standard 48-plus is the proper analogue signal meter, very unusual nowadays. The LCD display is also larger and you can choose from a standard channel number display or a frequency display.
The set is the same size as the standard Midland-48 and uses the same channel change mic. The controls are all similar but laid out in a different arrangement, which I think makes the set easier to use.
A new feature is the "ESP2" Noise Killer. This does remove a lot of the normal background FM noise, but it does alter the sound of incoming signal completely and I can not say I liked it, but it's down to personal preference. Turn it on or off depending upon your personal preference.
As with previous Midland models, this one is microprocessor controlled and all the channels are pre-programmed in this.
The set performs well on both transmit and receive and is up to the usual Midland standard in all respects. Personally I sometimes find all the Midland range a little harsh on receive, this appears to be due to the tight crystal filtering. The new Excel does seem a little better in this respect and I found the receive sharper than other Midland models.
And the best news is that the new 80-channel version is cheaper than the 40-channel, which we have previously sold at £125.00.
Price: £109.00
