Our Verdict:
The Midland 38 is the our most popular radio - it offers all you
need in a basic radio, without any of the frills. It is a popular choice for
mobile use where all you require is something basic and easy to use.
The radio covers the full legal 80 channels - the original UK 40
channels plus the European 40 channels. Output power is the full legal maximum
of 4W.
The 2 rotary controls on the front are for volume (plus on/off)
and squelch - which is basically all you need.
The only other controls on the radio are 3 push buttons, these
are for channel change (one up and one down) and band change (UK/EU). These 3
buttons are also repeated on the microphone - allowing you to change channels
and band without having to reach over to the radio.
The multifunction LCD display is backlit and shows the channel
number, band and incorporates a signal meter (for both RX and TX).
Overall the radio works well. The transmit audio is clear and
the reception quality is equal to radios which are much more expensive.
The radio is supplied complete with microphone, mic clip, radio
mounting bracket and fused power lead.
New Dual Voltage
The new version of this radio is now dual-voltage. It features
automatic switching between 12V and 24V - whichever supply you plug it into it
will work automatically.
This makes it ideal for the trucker and will certainly cut down on the number of
radios we have to repair because either the dropper has failed or the radio has
been plugged into the wrong socket!
